Stress Management - the Power of Positive Thinking

Stress and positive thinking

You probably know a person who is always able to find the bright side. No matter what, they can turn a negative day into a positive lesson. They can turn a stressful situation into a learning opportunity. And while you may have teased them for this quality, at the same time, you’ve wondered if you could be the same way. After all, they seem like they are much more able to resist stress and to handle the problems which come at them. Perhaps this positive thinking is the barrier you need to keep out the stress in your own life?

Noticing the Negative Thoughts Fights Stress

Before you can begin to become an optimist, you need to notice the negative thoughts you are having. Each time you have a negative thought cross your mind, for three days, write it down. This might take a bit of time on your part, so keeping this practice to a weekend may be helpful. At the end of this time, you will find you have pages and pages of negative thoughts and ideas. Simply by noticing what you are already doing, you will begin to see just how much opportunity there is for change and for creating a more positive lifestyle.

Turning Your Mind to Positive Things Makes Stress Go Away

Once you’ve determined the negative patterns in your head, you can begin to change them. For a few more days, take some time to argue with any negative thought you might have. For example, if you think to yourself, “Oh, I can’t do that,” challenge yourself. Ask yourself why you think what you do. Ask yourself what proof you have of not being able to do something. You want to begin to weaken the negative thoughts you have in your brain. And the more you weaken these thoughts, the less you will think them overall. You may even find yourself stopping the negative thoughts before they have a change to occur.

Anyone Can Change

While you may think of yourself as a pessimistic person, realize that anyone can change. Simply by recognizing the thoughts you have in your head, you can begin to see that you are simply choosing to think negatively. And from that point on, you can choose to think positively. In the end, it’s not that your thoughts are controlling you; you are controlling your thoughts – for better or for worse. Today, realize that you can change and that you will change when you make the effort to do so.

The more positively you can think, the less stress you will feel. When you are able to see options instead of obstacles in your mind, you will begin to see that stress is something which does not have to control you.
