A human body is designed to move. In the beginning, humans roamed the lands in order to find food and they weren’t sitting at a desk to accomplish this. When they moved around, they weren’t eating a lot either – unless they were able to catch food. As a result, humans were leaner and more active, helping to keep them trim and healthy. Being sedentary causes the body to slow down. Since you’re not using as much energy to sit as you might to stand or to walk, your body doesn’t burn calories as efficiently. Thus, you can begin to gain weight quickly, which can put a strain on the heart and on the rest of the body. In addition, fitness is quickly lost, which then changes your metabolism, making it even harder to lose weight.
Adding Fitness Activity to Your Desk Time
You can add activity to your day in short bursts. Instead of emailing a coworker about a project, you can begin to walk to their desk to ask them the question. Not only are you going to get an immediate answer, but you will also be able to get a few minutes of exercise each time you do this. You might also want to add some weight lifting at your desk, just doing some bicep curls as you are talking on the phone can help improve muscle tone. With small steps, you can begin to change the way your body looks, while also still keeping up with your workload.
Your fitness level doesn’t have to drop just because you work at a desk all day. You just need to find some creative ways to add fitness to your life.
